Education Equality Act
The major work facing the Legislature this year is the restructuring of our school funding system to provide equal opportunity for all Washington kids, whether they live in a rural, urban, or suburban area, or if their family is rich or poor.
Over a number of years, our school funding system has grown increasingly inequitable for students, teachers and taxpayers, and it’s time for change.
This week our Senate Majority Coalition Caucus released a comprehensive plan to provide ample and equitable funding that puts the actual needs of the student first.
Having been named chairman of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Committee, I have been involved in a number of discussions about this plan. I have also chaired work sessions in my committee about education funding and the educational opportunity gap. We have our work cut out for us, and I believe that we’re up to the task if we remain committed to working together across party lines.
I’ll be sharing more details about the plan (which you can read more about here) later this week.
