Sen. Hans Zeiger, R-Puyallup, issued the following statement regarding Amazon’s goal of teaching more than 10 million students a year how to code through summer camps, teacher training and other initiatives.
“I am excited to see that Amazon is stepping up to the challenge of training the next generation of coders by providing new opportunities for young people from low-income families with these coding training programs, scholarships and internships.
“We need to be preparing our students for their future, and this is a great step in helping them secure a career in an expanding field. This is a definite win for kids in Washington State and all across the country, and it’s going to help create a much-needed pool of skilled talent for our high-tech economy. Amazon Future Engineer will give students a real advantage when they enter the job market.
“Amazon’s goal of motivating more black, Hispanic and female students to get into computer science is a helpful step in closing the opportunity gap we see in public education.”
